Proclamation of the Piraguas

Keep the audience silent (bis)

and listen to our words (bis)

From the orders of Don Pelayo

after measuring the waters,

presided over by the god Neptune

the acts of this olympiad,

with the girlfriends, the newts,

the canyon, the centaurs and Pialla...

once again authorised, in Arriondas,

the canoe race.

And when we cheer

that the rules tell us to do,

answer all in chorus,

until you lose your voice,

which is fiesta of the whole of Asturias.

If anyone has a pretty girl nearby

do not lose sight of her

or stop watching her;

and, if you really like her,

make her fall in love with you,

because it’s tradition that in Llovio,

at the end of this day,

when the seven o’clock chime sounds

to the pretty girls who want it and allow it,

Don Pelayo gives permission

to be able to hug them.

And after, as time goes by,

we go to the priest and we get married,

with the children we might have

we will come to the Piraguas

with flower necklaces

and the monterass (tipical asturian hat),

there is no party more cheerful,

or more lively and gallant,

no party with more beautiful scenery,

which is the essence of Asturias.

Sing this with all your soul,

and make it resonate throughout the valley,
